Huffington Post Popular News: Myrtle Beach Activities: 5 Free Things To Do In South Carolina Beach Town

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Myrtle Beach, this year celebrating the 75th anniversary of its incorporation, is the heart of South Carolina's $16.5 billion tourism industry. Myrtle Beach is in the center of a 60-mile (100-kilometer) reach of beaches that attracts more than 14 million visitors a year to dozens of golf courses, hundreds of restaurants and tens of thousands of hotel, motel and other rental units. There's shopping at hundreds of stores and nine live entertainment theaters with almost 12,000 seats. But there's a lot to do for free. Here are five suggestions:

THE BEACH

This is the reason people come to Myrtle Beach. In South Carolina, the beaches are public and there are regular beach access points. Some areas have lifeguards and some have umbrellas and chairs for rent, but all you really need is a beach blanket and a cool drink. There's a beach for most every taste. Pawleys Island, to the south, is considered one of the oldest beach resorts on the East Coast with homes dating to the 1700s. The quiet beach is lined with weathered bungalows and proudly calls itself "arrogantly shabby." In Myrtle Beach, the shore is lined with high-rise hotels and condominiums and it's just a short walk to grab a burger along busy Ocean Boulevard. If you bring a pet, check local regulations for hours when dogs can be on the beach.

Huffington Post Popular News: Best Historic Miami Homes On The Market (PHOTOS)

While Miami historic preservationists fight to designate a 1925 home a historic landmark, thereby preventing its Real Housewives owner from gutting it, there are a handful of beautiful Miami homes older than that currently on the market.

Miami real estate officially boomed in the mid-1920s, so it's rare to find any property more than 80 years old. But HuffPost Miami worked with Realtor.com to find gorgeous 305 homes that are around 100 years old and currently for sale.

One adorable bungalow was built in 1902 for William Vogleson Little, the developer of Coconut Grove community Ye Little Woods.

Huffington Post Popular News: Jemima Kirke's Slip On The Red Carpet Looks Like PJs (PHOTOS)

Jemima Kirke seems to be inseparable from her "Girls" character, Jessa. The flowing blonde hair, drapey dresses and opulently bohemian aura not only resonate through the screen, but also in each red carpet appearance she makes.

So when we spotted the actress attending a charity event in New York yesterday, we knew it was yet another "art imitates life" moment. Jemima's slip dress and robe get-up seemed like a quirky choice for a red carpet stint. It looked like it came straight from the Victoria's Secret pajama catalogue.

Thankfully, Jemima's got enough confidence to pull off any wacky look she tries (on and off the show). But what do you think of the outfit? Is it too bizarre or is it offbeat and cool?

Huffington Post Popular News: DIA Art Legislation, By Sen. Randy Richardville, Would Protect Museum In Case Detroit Goes Bankrupt

With the future of Detroit's beloved art museum at risk, newly proposed legislation would theoretically protect it from creditors, were the cash-strapped city to go into Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy. But the legislator responsible was also instrumental in creating a law that gives the city's emergency manager, who sparked speculation about liquidation of the Detroit Institute of Arts' assets, sweeping authority.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville (R-Monroe) introduced Senate Bill 401 this week. It would amend an existing state law to require an art institute to "adhere to the code of ethics for museums published by the American Alliance of Museums or a successor organization.”

Last week, the Detroit Free Press reported that state-appointed Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr, who is tasked with righting a city with more than $15 billion in debt and long-term liabilities, is having art works assessed at the DIA.

Huffington Post Popular News: This Week's Worst-Dressed List Features Vanessa Hudgens' Animal Fur Hat (PHOTOS)

This week's worst-dressed list saw busy dresses and a little too much volume. Both Rita Ora and Kelly Osbourne struggled to make a prints work on the red carpet, as they made the cardinal mistake of over accessorizing. Meanwhile, Marion Cotillard wore a drop crotch jumpsuit that created extra bulk in her nether regions.

Though this week was a hotbed for sartorial missteps, Vanessa Hudgens' neon spandex, animal fur hat and crop top takes the cake for the most outrageous look. The "Spring Breakers" star's daring fashion ensemble is best reserved for Halloween.

Huffington Post Popular News: 'Does Someone Have To Go?': No One Has To Go! (VIDEO)

The imaginatively-titled "Does Someone Have to Go?" aired its second episode on Thursday, as the employees at VMS deliberated over -- you guessed it! -- whether someone had to go. And guess what? No one had to go!

Turns out that when faced with destroying a person's livelihood and preventing them from feeding their family, most employees chose not to toy with their co-worker's income.

“I feel terrible. I made a mistake. I don’t think Uncle Mike should be fired. I’m looking in everyone’s eyes right now, and I feel we may have come to a rush in judgment on Uncle Mike. I think he deserves a second chance," one remorseful VMS employee admitted.

Huffington Post Popular News: North Korea Capitalism? Farmers Planting Rice With Bonuses In Mind

HAMHUNG, North Korea -- North Korean farmers knee deep in muddy paddies across the country have a new incentive during this year's crucial rice planting season: possible bonuses that are part of an economic shift echoing ally China's steps three decades ago toward embracing capitalism.

Details about the changes are emerging nearly two months after the regime unveiled dual goals of building the economy and nuclear weapons in the first concrete economic policy laid out by leader Kim Jong Un since he took power in December 2011.

Huffington Post Popular News: What Esquire Magazine Gets Wrong In New Life/Work Debate Article

Esquire Magazine is acting as though they just discovered the life/work dilemma. Recognizing that there is a problem -- that's a good thing. Not as good is that writer Richard Dorment chose to spend much of his 7000-word epiphany accusing women of whining -- which is not only ironic (pots and kettles and all that) and so last decade, but mostly the very approach that will prevent whatever progress he is trying to achieve.

You can read the entire piece here, with Dorment’s excellent argument that the colliding demands of sion of home and office are only a problem for women, and then his unfortunate spiral, taking this oddly personally. To the latter point he writes:

...among those who traffic in gender studies, it is something of a truth universally acknowledged: Men are to blame for pretty much everything. And I freely admit, we do make for a compelling target.

Huffington Post Popular News: Robin Roberts Denies Rumors About Daytime Show

Could Robin Roberts be getting her own daytime show soon? The answer, according to the "Good Morning America" host, is no.

She has been back at the anchor desk at "GMA" since February, after several months on medical leave. Roberts announced last spring that she had been diagnosed with MDS, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder. She received a bone marrow transplant from her sister Sally in September, after grueling rounds of chemotherapy, and has been working on rebuilding her immune system.

"The mayor of New York City is running ads against me because I oppose President Obama's gun control legislation," he says in the ad. "Nothing in the Obama plan would have prevented tragedies like Newtown, Aurora, Tucson or even Jonesboro. I'm committed to finding real solutions to violence while protecting our Second Amendment rights."
