Same-sex Maryland couples planning to tie the knot were greeted by anti-gay marriage protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church outside the Annapolis courthouse on Jan. 2.

The Baltimore Sun reports that four members of the ultra-conservative Kansas church, which has previously picketed the funerals of Apple CEO Steve Jobs and slain gay student Matthew Shepard, made Annapolis' Anne Arundel Circuit Court their first Maryland stop as they object to the state's new gay marriage law, which took effect at midnight on New Year's Day.

Patch reports that Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of church founder Fred Phelps, sang songs and shouted that God sent Newtown shooter Adam Lanza from about 8-8:45 a.m.

Huffington Post Popular News: Penn State Will Adhere To NCAA Punishment, Despite Governor's Lawsuit

Pennsylvania State University officials said Wednesday they plan to move ahead on compliance with the NCAA punishment handed down in 2012 for the cover-up of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's sex abuse crimes, despite a lawsuit filed against the athletic governing body by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.

Corbett announced Tuesday he plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA to drop the sanctions on Penn State, Pennsylvania's flagship public university. The governor claims Penn State has been harmed by the NCAA's "harsh penalties," and that the organization "piled on," acting unlawfully because the NCAA stands to benefit from the sanctions.

Penn State has had no involvement in the planning of Corbett's lawsuit, according to a statement from spokesman David La Torre. For now, the university administration will act as if there is no lawsuit, according to the statement:

LAS VEGAS -- Prosecutors brought a murder charge against a 50-year-old woman accused of stabbing a young girl to death in an undeveloped Las Vegas-area housing tract and later slashing a casino co-worker while that woman dealt blackjack at a Las Vegas Strip resort.

Brenda Stokes Wilson's lawyer, Tony Liker, told a judge Wednesday that Stokes Wilson will plead not guilty to all six charges now pending against her in the Dec. 21 death of 10-year-old Jade Morris and the attack on 44-year-old Joyce Rhone at the Bellagio.

A judge set an evidence hearing for March 28 and ordered Wilson held without bail.

JASPER, Ala. -- Investigators believe a small plane that crashed in the Alabama woods was taken without permission for a joyride by a student pilot and two other teenagers who died in the wreck Tuesday night.

Walker County sheriff's Chief Deputy James Painter said Wednesday authorities are still investigating but believe the three teenagers took off in the plane before it went down in a wooded area near Jasper, northwest of Birmingham.

Of course, perhaps no quarterback burst on to the scene in 2012 quite like redshirt Texas A&M freshman Johnny "Football" Manziel. The Kerrville, Texas native put up incredible numbers -- not just for a freshman -- accounting for 24 touchdowns through the air and 19 on the ground. He threw for 3419 yards, ran for 1181 en route to becoming the first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy.

"This is a moment that I've dreamed about since I've been a kid running around the backyard pretending I was Doug Flutie throwing Hail Marys to my dad. Now I'm so blessed to be on the stage with such a group of great guys," Manziel said after winning the award.
