Developer Dan Gilbert's talk of transforming downtown Detroit into a pedestrian paradise full of benches, parks, promenades and retail might be hard to picture. But you only have to look back 100 years or so, with the help of graphic designer Ryan Urban, to get an idea of the city's potential.
In a historic photo of Campus Martius from the first decade of the 20th century, streets belong to pedestrians. Urban (how fitting), a 25-year-old nursing student and EMT who previously studied design, meticulously colorized a panoramic photograph to show the city as it would have looked at the time.
