In the latest batch of "Happy Endings" episodes, Mark-Paul Gosselaar made his bitter return as Chase, the man who'd promised to ruin Max's life. He confronted Max and explained that he'd made this his life mission, but he also realized that Max's life was such a mess already, he wasn't sure how to ruin it.
This revelation put Jane in "fix Max" mode, where she gave him a complete makeover. He wound up assistant manager at a grocery store, and a local hero after he saved a choking reporter. Fearing that Max was behind his quick success, Max self-sabotaged, and wound up in the hospital.
There, he ran into Chase again. Chase hadn't destroyed his life. In fact, Chase had nearly died. But, before he could move on, he recommitted to his life's mission of destroying Max.
